Change of Plans

When I started out at Austin Peay, I thought that I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life, what field I’d like to be studying, exactly what occupation I’d like to obtain– everything. However, (like most college kids) here I am changing my major, like I thought I’d never have to do. I think once you get into college and start taking classes you get somewhat of a reality check and have to ask yourself “Is this really what I want to do with the rest of my life?” I discovered that this is a time when life is still open for practically any decision– you can choose your path and if you realize it’s not really what you want it’s not set in stone and it’s okay to change your mind.

Having said all that, I was a Chemistry Pre-Med major with a Biology and Leadership minor when I began my freshman year. I kept the two minors but am now a Nursing major.I find out this summer if I am accepted into the Nursing school. We have a very competitive Nursing program here at APSU since it is one of the top in the state, so I am really hoping I’ll be admitted into it. It’s been a lot of work changing my major especially since the curriculum is so different, which was shocking to me since they both involve the medical profession. However, my new advisor was very helpful and showed me what classes I needed to take to get back on track. Basically, I spent the spring semester trying to catch up on all the classes I needed and this summer I am taking my last requirement (Anatomy and Physiology II) for entrance into the Nursing program . Honestly, I’m a little nervous because summer courses are much more fast paced than fall and spring classes, but I’m sure it will turn out fine.

Overall what I wanted to achieve in writing this blog was letting all those individuals who are soon beginning college know that you need to really think about what it is you want to do with your life and use college (the classes, the activities, the people you meet) to help in doing so. In closing, my best advice is: take a variety of classes and see what interests you most until you find your niche, even if you are fairly certain of which direction you’re headed.

Thanks for reading! Catch up with me and the other bloggers next week. Oh, and come by the campus sometime to take a visit I, or the other tour guides (RJ and Chiquita), will be happy to show you around and tell you all the things we love about attending Austin Peay.
