Bruised Legs and Egos

So two words that you probably don’t know describe me is— ACCIDENT PRONE…yes, accident prone. If there is a way to fall down, trip on something, knock something over…I’ll find it. The main thing that has made me all too aware of my ability to hurt myself in just about any situation is a new hobby my husband and I have taken up: mountain biking.

It started in December when we decided we should do something to exercise together, so we went shopping and found really nice mountain bikes for my mom to give us as Christmas gifts. Up until a few weeks ago all we had done was ride them around the neighborhood, but now we’ve been going to the bike trails at a local park in Clarksville. Even the first time we went I was falling all over things, hitting every rock on the path, and came home with bruised legs and sore. Trust me watching me attempt the trails was a sight to see.

However, you’d think I would have learned my lesson to be more aware and careful, but the next time we went I was riding down a hill that went into a creek. It barely had any obstructions in it, but the one that was there– you guessed it— I slammed smack dab into it. I went flying over the handle bars and laid there for a moment, with a bruised ego more than anything.

Oh but the self destruction doesn’t stop there, on the next trip to the riding trails I had made it safely down a gigantic hill, and through a narrow bridge, only to hit a tree root, fall over, get my head stabbed my a tree branch and fall into poison ivy with my bike pinned on top of me.

(I hope I’m amusing those of you who enjoy shows like Scarred on MTV or the show/movie with all the guys attempting random acts that could very well kill them– you know which one I mean.)

Oh and by the way did I mention I don’t have a helmet (yeah, my mom doesn’t like that too much)?! And when I went to buy knee pads someone had replaced them with wrist guards, go figure.

Moral of the story is I’ve decided I need more than a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads– I need a fully cushioned body pad to even attempt this new hobby I’ve found.
