Operating Room

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

So an update for what’s going on with me…All I can say is life in college, especially nursing school is stressful! Fall break was a good diversion and the semester is going by quickly, but sometimes I can’t believe how busy I am.

Doing nursing clinicals at Gateway has been a really great experience so far. I really enjoyed the day I got to spend in the operating room. I got to watch a vascular surgery and see the insdide of arteries and veins as they tried to open them to fix a clot. (No, it’s not exactly like what you see on Grey’s or House!) It was really cold in there though! Anyway, I had to wear a metal jacket, because of the radiation from the x-ray machine, which was super heavy. I was also surprised at how nice the doctor was– he was very willing to explain how he was doing things and why. I realized how important the anesthesiologists were too, which makes me think that maybe that’s a field I’d like to pursue someday. Overall, it was a great learning experience and I hope that I get to see more OR procedures as I go through the rest of nursing school.

And on a side note– I hope everybody goes and VOTES! I’m super excited since this is the first presidential election I can vote in. Oh, and remember that in Tennessee, we have early voting so you should definitely take advantage of that so you won’t be stuck in some ridiculously long line on Nov. 4.
